Attorney – Memphis, TN

Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc. is seeking a staff attorney to provide high quality legal services to survivors of domestic violence in accordance with the program mission, priorities, guidelines, government regulations, LSC restrictions, grant requirements, and the Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct.  Position location is Memphis, Tennessee.

Essential functions include developing a good working rapport with clients; conducting interviews, including home visits when appropriate; giving legal advice; and performing other case management duties and responsibilities.  The Attorney will conduct legal research; prepare and draft legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs, appeals, case memos and referral memoranda as appropriate.  In addition, the attorney will provide a full range of legal services to clients, including advice, negotiations, representation in state and federal court, and administrative advocacy.

Qualifications

Must be a member of the Tennessee State Bar or willing to take the next available bar exam and have a demonstrated interest in assisting low-income people and conducting aggressive advocacy.  Litigation experience preferred.  Strong interpersonal, verbal and writing skills required.  Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted, and high-volume atmosphere, and possess organizational and analytical skills to manage administrative and client advocacy responsibilities.

Administrative Assistant – Memphis, TN

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS), Inc. is seeking a Part-Time Administrative Assistant to provide clerical support for the Pro Bono Unit, such as composing, typing and/or transcribing pleadings, briefs, correspondence, memos, administrative reports, subpoenas, summonses, etc. Proofread documents and other materials for correctness before processing and transmitting and assists with the MALS’ case management process. Work schedule is 20-25 hours weekly.

Schedules appointments for attorneys and paralegals and maintains appointment calendars, and books travel arrangements. Answers and directs telephone calls and provides assistance and/or information to callers about MALS’ services. Communicates with clients, lawyers, court personnel, government agency personnel, etc. in performing duties and interacts in a professional and courteous manner with all groups and individuals. Establishes and maintains electronic and paper filing systems for correspondence, reports, time logs, etc.

This position reports to the Managing Attorney of the Pro Bono Unit. It performs clerical and administrative duties and ensures the efficient and smooth operation of the PAI Program.

Qualifications

MALS is seeking an individual who is highly organized, a self-starter and fast learner, gives keen attention to detail, has the ability to manage multiple projects and assignments, and enjoys working in a team-based environment.

Applicants should have:

  • An Associate degree in secretarial science, business, or related field; at least two years of experience as a Legal Secretary preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be able to type at least 50 words per minute and take and transcribe dictation at a speed of 50 words per minute
  • Excellent computer skills with databases and Microsoft Office applications
  • Have Notary designation or the ability to become a Notary
  • Background check may be required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize projects and strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Good research skills
  • Ability to exercise individual initiative and use discretion in handling confidential matters
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Excellent customer service skills

Attorney – Memphis, TN

Memphis Area Legal Services’ Fair Housing Unit is seeking an attorney with strong litigation, analytical, and organizational skills to work for an HUD-approved housing counseling agency offering a variety of services, including Mortgage Delinquency and Default/Loss Mitigation: identifying options to help clients save their homes from foreclosure; Fair Lending: identifying scams and predatory lending practices. The staff attorney will provide legal advice and representation to homeowners who are victims of predatory lending have been sued by the city or county government for delinquent taxes, have been sued by homeowner associations, and/or discriminated against based on race, gender, familial status, and/or disability.

Reporting to the Managing Attorney of the Fair Housing Unit; the Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing high quality legal services to qualified individuals and groups under MALS’ guidelines and substantive priority areas.

  • Law degree; admitted to the Tennessee Bar or eligible based upon reciprocity
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to listen well
  • 2 to 5 years of legal experience preferred

Memphis Area Legal Services is seeking an attorney with strong litigation, analytical, and organizational skills to MALS seeks an attorney to provide legal representation to eligible clients in its rural office located in Covington, TN.  Applicants should be licensed in Tennessee and has some experience.  Salary is DOE, with excellent benefits including 401(k).
