Staff Attorney – Housing Unit

Memphis Area Legal Services’ Fair Housing Unit is seeking an attorney with strong litigation, analytical, and organizational skills to work for an HUD-approved housing counseling agency offering a variety of services, including Mortgage Delinquency and Default/Loss Mitigation: identifying options to help clients save their homes from foreclosure; Fair Lending: identifying scams and predatory lending practices. The staff attorney will provide legal advice and representation to homeowners who are victims of predatory lending have been sued by the city or county government for delinquent taxes, have been sued by homeowner associations, and/or discriminated against based on race, gender, familial status, and/or disability.

Reporting to the Managing Attorney of the Fair Housing Unit; the Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing high quality legal services to qualified individuals and groups under MALS’ guidelines and substantive priority areas.

• Law degree: admitted to the Tennessee Bar or eligible based upon reciprocity

• Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to listen well

• Experience in general sessions or other civil courts required

• Litigation experience in Fair Housing preferred

• Salary DOE w/excellent benefits, including 401(K)

Paralegal – Housing Unit

Memphis Area Legal Services’ Fair Housing Unit is seeking a Paralegal with strong administrative, analytical, and organizational skills to work for an HUD-approved housing counseling agency offering a variety of services, including Mortgage Delinquency and Default/Loss Mitigation: identifying options to help clients save their homes from foreclosure; Fair Lending: identifying scams and predatory lending practices. The paralegal will conduct interviews of clients, including home visits, when appropriate; assists in advising clients; conducts investigations; and performs all other case management duties and responsibilities to comply with any funding requirements. Conducts legal research; prepares and drafts legal documents, pleadings, and letters, case memos, and referral memoranda, as appropriate. Files pleadings with the court clerk and delivers or directs delivery of subpoenas to witnesses and parties in cases.

Reporting to the Managing Attorney of the Fair Housing Unit; the Paralegal will be responsible for and/or assists in providing high quality legal services to qualified individuals and groups under MALS’ guidelines and substantive priority areas.

Applicants should have:

• A bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or graduate of a paralegal training program

• At least one year of experience as a paralegal

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills with attention to detail

• Excellent interpersonal skills
