Program Support Specialist / Community Navigator – Covington, Tennessee

Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) is the primary provider of civil legal representation for low income individuals and families in Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby, and Tipton counties in Tennessee who are facing critical, sometimes life-threatening situations. Legal assistance is provided through advice and counsel, representation in court and administrative proceeding, and community education and outreach to vulnerable residents. Since 1970, MALS has grown to become a multi-faceted community law firm guided by values and principles that embody its commitment to equal access to justice for all.  This position is located in Covington, Tennessee.

The Program Support Specialist / Community Navigator provides guidance to those seeking housing stability through THDA’s rental assistance program as well as coordinate legal services in civil matters for program participants in the areas of divorce (uncontested), child support, having landlords make needed housing repairs, obtaining social security and unemployment benefits.   In addition, the Program Support Specialist / Community Navigator provides targeted community outreach, perform intake activities to facilitate program enrollment and retention, maintain the accuracy of program data, ensure the timely entry of programmatic data, assist with the development of detailed reports as well as perform administrative tasks that directly support the MALS’ housing priorities and activities.

Bachelor’s degree in a social discipline or two to five years of experience in social services field preferred. Salary DOE w/excellent benefits, including 401(K).

Attorney – Memphis, TN

Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc. is seeking a staff attorney to provide high quality legal services to survivors of domestic violence in accordance with the program mission, priorities, guidelines, government regulations, LSC restrictions, grant requirements, and the Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct.  Position location is Memphis, Tennessee.

Essential functions include developing a good working rapport with clients; conducting interviews, including home visits when appropriate; giving legal advice; and performing other case management duties and responsibilities.  The Attorney will conduct legal research; prepare and draft legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs, appeals, case memos and referral memoranda as appropriate.  In addition, the attorney will provide a full range of legal services to clients, including advice, negotiations, representation in state and federal court, and administrative advocacy.

Qualifications

Must be a member of the Tennessee State Bar or willing to take the next available bar exam and have a demonstrated interest in assisting low-income people and conducting aggressive advocacy.  Litigation experience preferred.  Strong interpersonal, verbal and writing skills required.  Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted, and high-volume atmosphere, and possess organizational and analytical skills to manage administrative and client advocacy responsibilities.

Attorney – Covington, TN

Memphis Area Legal Services is seeking an attorney with strong litigation, analytical, and organizational skills to MALS seeks an attorney to provide legal representation to eligible clients in its rural office located in Covington, TN.  Applicants should be licensed in Tennessee and has some experience.  Salary is DOE, with excellent benefits including 401(k).

Reporting to the Managing Attorney of the Covington office; the Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing high quality legal services to qualified individuals and groups under MALS’ guidelines and substantive priority areas.

Qualifications

  • Law degree; admitted to the Tennessee Bar or eligible based upon reciprocity
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to listen well
  • 2 to 5 years of legal experience preferred
